The Harley-Davidson IRONe / Stacyc E Drive Balance Bikes

Since first seeing the Stacyc electric balance bikes at the 2017 AIMExpo in Columbus, we’ve thought about getting them for the youngest members of our crew – Cole and Tyler.  Two years later they are 5 and 7 – and we pulled the trigger and picked up a pair of the Stacyc’s. Our only regret – that we waited at all!

The Stacyc’s are designed to introduce kids to two wheeled travel.  Tyler, just turning 5, was still on training wheels and wanted nothing to do with taking them off.  After watching his brother riding around on the Stacyc – he jumped on and within 5 minutes was ripping around the yard like a Pro.  No exaggeration at all – he simply twisted the throttle and was off riding with his feet off the ground within 10-15 feet. And he never looked back.

The bikes are offered in two versions – a 12” and a 16” version.  This refers to the size of the tires, but there are a few other differences as well in terms of the power output and the battery provided.  According to Stacyc – the 12eDRIVE is perfect for 3-5 year olds under 75lbs with a 14-20” inseam, while the 16eDRIVE is intended for 4-7 year olds also under 75 lbs – with a 18-24” inseam.  On the website and all of the dealers we checked with – they were consistently priced at $649 for the 12” model and $699 for 16” model (for either the H-D or Stacyc models). Obviously there’s some overlap in terms of the kids they are intended for – and there’s only $50 separating the two models.  So, if there’s any doubt in your mind – we would recommend you go with the larger 16” sized bike if your child fits within their recommended guidelines – REGARDLESS of their previous riding experience. All of the bikes have very simple controls that allow parents to limit speeds to help the kids feel comfortable and safe on the bikes.  So, it’s a simple matter of toning the bikes down for a younger rider, and with the adjustable seat – it should be easy to fit as well.

If you want to get your youngest kids off the video games and out riding – this is the deal, and it doesn’t matter if they’ve ever ridden a bike before.  These will get them riding in no time!

In March of this year, Harley-Davidson purchased Stacyc and introduced two Harley branded versions of the stability bikes.  A.D. Farrow Harley-Davidson in Columbus had already been a dealer for the Stacyc bikes and had been a huge advocate for the bikes.

“These are great way to help build the next generation of riders, and bringing the fun and enjoyment of riding to kids everywhere.”

For comparison, we picked up both a Stacyc 16” and a Harley-Davidson eIRON16, Harley’s version of the powered balance bikes.  We could not find any difference between the two – other than the obvious Harley-Davidson name and bold orange and black colors.

For a Harley-Davidson eIRON, you can stop by any of the A.D. Farrow Harley-Davidson Shops

What Others are Saying –

“The one major problem we experienced with the STACYC .. was getting the kids off the bike when it was time to eat dinner or do homework.  BOTTOM LINE: The Stacyc..electric balance bike is an amazing machine!” – DirtBikeMagazine.com

“From an adult user’s perspective, the Stacyc is amazing. Having taught young riders on gas-powered motorcycles prior to this test, we’d say the learning curve is much quicker on the Stacyc. The electric powertrain reduces a young rider’s anxiety and fear. Without the sound and heat of a gas engine and a much lower overall weight—the 16eDrive weighs 19 pounds with battery—kids feel more comfortable twisting the throttle and getting going. And this makes us happy. A true win-win.”  – Justin Dawes, CycleVolta.com

“With my 5 year old resisting bicycle training, I decided to give this a shot. Amazingly, in less than 5 minutes, he was able to ride the STACYC on two wheels, despite not yet being able to ride a bicycle! … the STACYC design is awesome and our son is VERY happy with his new “electric motorcycle.”  – Ryan L

“Got this for my 5 year old son and it has been fantastic. Has been great for the entire family as now the little guy can keep up on the longer family rides. Made and easy 5 miles on single battery (relatively flat). Charging system so easy a 5 year old (and probably younger) can use it, he swaps his own battery and is back riding in seconds. Highly recommended this for anyone looking to motivate their kid to spend more time, train and just plain have fun on two wheels!” – K Man

Selected as one of the “5 Best Motorcycles to Grow Motorcycling” by Cycle World Magazine.  “While not technically motorcycles, StaCyc’s electric-powered stability cycles have a twist throttle and rear brake to teach youngsters skills to make the jump to a motorcycle sooner and easier.” – Cycle World, May 2019

WHAT IS A STACYC™?

STACYC™ Stability Cycle is an Electric Powered Balance Bike.  STACYC was designed to be a non intimidating way for young children to lean and enjoy riding two wheels. A STACYC™ is the first “powered” balance bike and is confidence inspiring for a child who has only been walking for a short time. If your child can walk, they can begin to ride a STACYC™ in the non-powered mode. Once your child is proficient in coasting and braking, they can begin the last “powered” phases of the process. This will bridge them through the awkward years of physical development where the leg/torso ratio does not allow for a low and stable seat height in a regular bicycle. The STACYC™ was designed to allow children to gain all the skills of riding bicycles and while allowing for an extremely low seat height and low weight, providing thousands of hours of seat time, not easily attainable with a regular “kids” sized bicycle.

IRONe vs Bike

IRONE ™ VS. BICYCLE

  • Ability to learn bike handling skills confidently without having to pedal at the same time will accelerate a young rider’s confidence.
  • Ability to reach the ground comfortably allows riders to learn without training wheels.
  • Extend ride time by increasing the fun factor.
  • Kids 3-5 yrs. old are typically willing to ride farther than on a traditional pedal bike.
  • Similar weight to kids BMX bikes
IRONe vs Motorcycle

IRONE ™ VS. ENTRY MOTORCYCLE

  • Enhances ability to learn motorcycle handling skills at a younger age: 3 years old vs. 6 years old.
  • Ultra-low seat height for balance, push and confidence.
  • An IRONe ™ weighs 4X less than some of the lightest kids’ motorcycles.
  • Kid manageable, instilling confidence in tip-over situations. Essentially they can pick up an IR0Ne ™ on their own as it weighs 17-19 lbs. vs a 90+ lbs. motorcycle.
  • Teaches throttle control in a lower impact atmosphere.
  • Twist throttle with selectable speeds.
  • Allows a seamless transition onto their first 50cc dirt bike.
  • Can be ridden in more locations, more often.
